‘There is no friend as loyal as a book.’
Reading is an important part of school life at Sutton Community Academy. We strongly believe that giving students the skill of being a strong and fluent reader sets them on the road to success. The gift of reading allows you to visit places you have never seen; to imagine worlds that don’t exist and learn about the experiences of thousands of people you will never meet.
At Sutton Community Academy we are proud of our commitment to reading across all elements of the academy. Students have access to high quality and thought- provoking texts, through our tutor programme – ‘Sutton Reads’; our reading rich curriculum and our incredible library.
Sutton Reads
Sutton Reads is our tutor programme where students are read too at least once a week by their tutor during the designated slots on the tutor curriculum. Students have a copy of the book and follow the reading of their tutor. Texts have been selected to provide students with the opportunity to read a wide range of challenging texts from a wide range of authors from different cultural backgrounds. Books have been carefully selected that addressed a wide range of issues for students to discuss.
What will I read?
Y7 – Boy 87 and The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket
Y8 – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry
Y9 – Regeneration and I know why the caged bird sings
Y10 – To kill a Mockingbird and 1984
Y12 – Brighton Rock
The purpose of the programme is to help students to develop syntactic control by hearing a variety of sentence structures, building their vocabulary.
“When we read to students, fluency barriers disappear.”
